Baking soda is an incredibly versatile ingredient and an easy way to clean your hair. Even more shocking than the fact that it works is how much better my hair began to look when I started using baking soda compared to traditional shampoo!
Why stay away from regular shampoos, you’re probably wondering. Because they can contain a lot of harmful chemicals, like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, DEA/Diethanolamine, Parabens and Fragrance. Imagine that only the fragrance can contain more than 4000 different chemical ingredients!
After trying all kinds of natural brands of shampoo, different combinations of commercial products, with little to no effect, I discovered baking soda and vinegar. No more complicated routines from then on, just wash with baking soda and rinse with vinegar. This gives my hair volume, body and strength.
The baking soda and vinegar method is cheap, effective, simple and chemical-free. Here’s how you can get started:
Mix one-part baking soda with three parts water. You can adjust this depending on your hair length. For example, if you have shoulder length hair you should mix about 2 to 3 tablespoon of baking soda with 3 times that amount of water. You can use a small squeeze bottle.
Apply the baking soda and water mixture to dry or wet hair by starting at the roots and working to the ends.
Let it sit for 1 – 3 minutes then rinse with warm water.
After washing and rinsing with the baking soda mixture, apply a vinegar rinse.
For the Vinegar Rinse mix 1 part white or apple cider vinegar with 4 parts water. You can add lavender to minimize the vinegar smell, or any other essential oils.
Tilt your head back, close your eyes (to avoid getting this mixture in your eyes), and distribute through your hair. You can also put the vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it on your hair.
After a few seconds, rinse with cold water. It helps to seal in moisture, smooth the hair, and add shine.
